Cedar Carvings by Tim Motchman

Cedar Carvings by Tim Motchman

Technique

Tim Motchman has chosen local Yellow Cedar for his creations. The soft wood is wonderful for carving intricate details you find in his work. The deep yellow colour and beautiful smell add depth to his works. To add definition and contrast to pieces Tim will also carve Red Cedar, Birds-eye Maple, Yew wood, Black Walnut, and spalted Alder.

Starting from a basic block of wood, Tim uses a variety of tools to make his works come alive. From chainsaw to chisels and knives, Tim slowly works from block to masterpiece. all finish sanding is done by hand.

Each piece is unique as a concept and a rough sketch. The carving emerges on its own to Tim’s eyes.

Commissions

Tim Motchman carves his creations primarily by custom order and accepts commissions for pieces similar to the ones shown here. His best work is the combination of a clients idea, Tim’s skills, tools and effort. Since each creation is from a unique piece of wood and carved by hand, one at a time, there will be variations in size and shape. No two carvings are the same.

Carvings require considerable patience to create, obtaining a carving also requires patience. There is a waiting list for my work. The wait for your piece can be anywhere from 6-18 months. Be assured that once your name is on the order list your piece will be completed.

A deposit of up to 1/4 of the cost of the carving is required for all commissions. This deposit puts your name on my order list and assures your commitment to the project. When your piece is about to be started, you will be contacted to confirm you would like to proceed. Once your carving has been completed, it will be shipped to you for final approval. The balance is due on receiving the carving. Doing business with Tim requires a level of trust on both parts.

Shipping can be expensive especially for larger pieces. The cost of shipping is paid by the client. Custom wooden shipping crates are made to ensure the safety of the larger pieces. Purolator Courier is used for larger pieces and Canada Post for smaller items.

Prices are available upon request.
